Harvest Moonviewing

March 4, 2017 Alexis Sanborn

September is the harvest season for those living in the northern hemisphere. During the warmth of September days, the once brilliant green rice fields have ripened to a golden green and the bows lay heavy with the crop considered the national staple. The tradition is said to have originated during the classical period when aristocrats would gather under the autumn moon of September. The moon of this month was said to appear the most full, due to the relative position of the earth, sun, and moon. On the evening of the full moon, families and friends gather together to admire the moon while partaking in seasonal foods such as newly harvested rice, edamame (soy beans), chestnuts, and other autumn ripening foods.
